Should Kids Take Their Scooters On Holiday?
One of the big obsessions of young kids at the moment is the scooter. These simple boards with two or four wheels and a steering column have not overtaken the bike as a favourite way to get around but they are proving to be as popular for some age groups. This often leads kids to ask about taking their scooter on holiday – but is there a good case for saying yes?
Getting The Right Gear
There are lots of variables in the equation when deciding whether to take a scooter on holiday. For example, if you are driving somewhere and have a bike rack for the car, then everyone can take their bikes. You might even fit a ride on car for the younger ones in if you have a caravan or a trailer tent. But for most holiday situations, you can take the right scooter.
When buying a scooter, look for one that folds up as much as possible. This means the footboard area folds against the steering column. And maybe even the column itself folds in two. The smaller the scooter folds, the easier it is to stash in luggage and take away with you.
Why Take The Scooter On Holiday?
Because good quality scooters are lightweight and easy to handle, they are far easier to take on any type of holiday. But why is it a good idea?
Cut Down On Walking
If you plan visits to tourist attractions, long walks or any other type of prolonged activity on foot, a scooter can allow the kids to go further. You can walk a certain distance as an adult but for most kids, this distance is reduced. However, if they have their trusty scooter along, they can scoot for a good amount of the trip and they will be able to walk further. Just check first that the location doesn’t have any kind of restrictions on scooters.
Keeps Them Occupied
It doesn’t take a lot of space for kids to play on their scooters and this means you have can have a break while they scoot and you don’t need a huge amount of space for them to do it. Even taking a walk along the beach front can be more fun for them with their scooter, whizzing ahead then zooming back to you.
It Gets Them Active
One of the big worries for parents today is that kids spend too much time on electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets. This can definitely apply when on holiday as they aren’t with their friends or all of their stuff. But having a scooter along can keep them away from that smartphone and get them outside and being active.
While it might not be practical to take a scooter on every family holiday, it is definitely worth considering depending on where you are going and what you plan to do. It can help make the holiday for your child and also make things a little easier for you as well.
